Latest DaVinci From Blackmagic
April 13, 2010
“Today, a kid in his bedroom can have
the same technical capability as a large post
facility,” said Blackmagic Design CEO Grant
Petty at the Monday press conference. “The
only thing that matters is the creativity of the
user, not the budget.”
Nothing underscored this perspective more
than the company’s new DaVinci Resolve
7.0, which includes support for the Mac
OS X platform with a software-only model
starting at just $995 — rather than DaVinci’s
old pricing from $200,000.
After Blackmagic acquired the venerable
company last year, many speculated that a
new, low-price DaVinci offering wou ld be
in the works, but few probably suspected how
rapidly this “revolutionary change in color
correction,” as Petty described it, would occur.
Uncertain as to whether 3D is a “fad or a
trend,” Petty explained how the company’s
new products — including the DeckLink HD
Extreme 3D capture card and HD Link Pro
3D monitor solution — are stereo-capable but
not dedicated.
“We didn’t want to offer 3D-only
products,” he said. “Rather, we added 3D to
normal ones.”
