First impressions of the 2010 NAB Show were solidified on Tuesday morning as the second day’s wave of exhibit-goers made its way through the South Lower Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“We had an outstanding first day,” said Michael Kornet, chief marketing officer of NewTek, which counted some 2,000 visitors to its theater-like booth on Monday.

“That’s more qualified leads than we had at the end of last year’s NAB,” he added, noting that the cost-effective virtual newsroom, streaming HD, graphics capability and editing functionality offered by TriCaster TCXD300 “presents a new level of capability at a price point that has people excited.”

He reasons, too, that the company’s graduation from upstart to industry stalwart has had critical mass effects as well.

“It was challenging to create an interface that was suitable not only for video professionals but high school students, and could be learned in just a few hours,” said Dr. Andrew Cross, NewTek’s executive vice president of software engineering. “And I’m not joking when I say that. There are a number of high schools using the TriCaster to do streaming programs.”

Down the hall, 1 Beyond Digital Video Systems, a maker of high-end data recorders, offered demos of 3D-capable Wrangler portable field ingest, editing and playback systems for tapeless file-based workflows. Company CEO and founder Terry Cullen said the Wrangler was recently used for the production of the upcoming Lionsgate 3D horror feature “Saw VII.”

Pairs of Wranglers were used in conjunction with Silicon Imaging stereo cameras, with one DVR serving as a primary and the second as backup.

“While 3D is a hot topic right now, our DVRs can also be used for 2D, of course,” Cullen added.

He also offered a sneak look at photos and diagrams of 1 Beyond’s in-the-works camera-mountable Wrangler Mini DVR, which will offer uncompressed recording in multiple formats and will be compatible with P2, RED, Sony SxS, Grass Valley REV PRO and JVC workflows.

“We have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of attendees,” said Dennis Dunn, senior sales advisor for 615 Music, which supplies stock materials to education, government, corporate and commercial clients, among others.

He said that the company is proud to have added work by ASCAP Composer of the Year Adam Zelkind to its library.

“Like everyone else, we have to carefully consider the costs involved with exhibiting at the NAB Show,” said CEO and president Randy Wachtler, taking a moment away from a meeting with prospective customers from the United Kingdom. “But the people here are ready to make deals and do business. That’s what brings us back.”

“We’re very happy with the traffic we’ve had,” reported Jennifer S. Georger, senior marketing coordinator at ATTO Technology. “... Like last year, this year is all about quality attendees.

And, noting ATTO’s many partner companies that are also exhibiting — including AJA Video Systems, Avid, iStoragePro, G-Tech and Matrox — “the success of the show is a group effort, as we’re so interconnected with our partners. If they have a good show, we have a good show.”
